Year 5 & 6

At Horsham 298 Primary School, Years 5 and 6 classes work closely together and follow a 2-year curriculum program. In 2009 we have two Year 5 classes, two Year 6 classes and one combined Year 5/6 class.

Obviously a lot of our time is taken up with classes in Literacy (English) and Numeracy (Maths). Years 5 and 6 is a vital stage in children’s educational development and growth. At this stage we see students extending their abilities and preparing for the future challenges of secondary school.

As well as a comprehensive class program, students have lessons with specialist teachers in the areas of Music/Drama, Science and Technology, Physical Education and LOTE-Italian.

Computer skills are taught by classroom teachers, who make regular use of the school’s new computer lab, as well as mobile trolleys of laptop computers. This year our year 5 students were chosen to take part in the government’s net-book trial, providing another avenue for computer skills to be taught and practised. Computer activities are incorporated logically into the general class program by the teacher.

As well as a comprehensive Health program, classroom teachers also teach Humanities lessons each week.

This year, our Humanities units have included Australia’s Near Neighbours in Asia, in which each class investigated one country, which they taught their peers about on ‘Asia Day’; Aboriginal Studies, with participation in an excursion to Brambuk Cultural Centre, and finally, an investigation into Australian Inland Explorers and the digging up of information about Gold.

The years 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to attend camp with their peers,- Year 5s will visit Sovereign Hill in Ballarat and Year 6 students will visit Melbourne.

The Year 6 students participate in transition days at Horsham College as preparation for their next stage of education at Secondary School.
