Communities

A community is a place that develops when a number of people, animals or insects decide to live together.

A community provides Protection, Goods and Services, Shelter and Recreation.

Protection

When a group of people live together they need rules so that everybody feels safe and can get on together. The police, lollipop ladies and lawyers are some of the people who make sure people obey the community rules.

We have street signs, traffic lights and school crossings to help keep us safe.

Explore how these rules are made, why we need them and what a community would be like without them.

Goods and Services

When everybody lives together they usually have different jobs within that community. We use the money from our jobs to pay other people to do things for us that we can't do. The mechanic fixes our car, the hairdresser gives us a haircut and the cleaner cleans the carpet. These are called 'Services'.

The community also provides some services, such as hospitals, schools and the library.

We also use our money to buy 'Goods'. These are things like food, clothes, furniture, toys or a car.

There are many places and people who provide the community with goods. The Supermarket, fish and chip shop K-mart, the newsagent and the Sports store.

Explore people's jobs, Choose from a range of illustrations those which are 'Goods' or 'Services'.

Shelter

A community gives us a place to live. Some people build and live in houses or flats of their own and some rent their homes from other people. For people who are waiting to get a house of their own or who are visiting, the community also provides shelter in the form of Motels, Hotels and Caravan Parks.

When people are not able to look after themselves the community also provides Retirement and Rest Homes.
