Year Level: 5/6

KLA English Strand: Reading Level 4 Writing Level 4

Abstract: Children will brainstorm Fairytales as a writing genre. In groups of 3 or 4 they will research the topic using the Internet as well as books to access storytelling techniques from around the world. They will then attempt to write and publish a Fairytales of their own.

Prerequisites: Understanding how to locate Fairytales on the Internet. (Internet navigating, searching and printing.) Knowledge of word processing packages.

Resources Needed: Internet access to the World Wide Web, Word Processing Packages, KidPix, Fairytales Books

Activities

1. As a class the children will brainstorm fairytales (audience, characteristics in common, characters etc.)

2. Students will follow the research process (inquiry based) that consists of

a) Establishing prior knowledge and identifying aspects for investigation.

b) Deciding on direction - type of Fairytales they wish to write and how they wish to present it. (book, slideshow, upload on to Internet)

c)Finding out - information gathering and processing. Students should attempt to use both electronic and text information.

d) Students are required to draft and edit.

e) Students are required to present their completed story to a live audience as well as submitting it on the Internet where possible.

f) Students should reflect on and evaluate their project by writing a brief report and sharing their comments with the class.

Comments:

Publication and presentation of stories can vary. Students can decide how this could be achieved. e.g. slideshow, up load to Whootie’s Playhouse, big book or storybook format.

Development of research skills.

Development of computer skills: Typing, using the Internet, word processing, drawing programs.
