Welcome to Australia

In 2002, the Year 3 class welcomed Kevin and Aimee, from Canada, to our classroom.

When Kevin was 5 years old he came to live in Horsham with his parents for a year. He went to Horsham Primary School when he was in Year Prep. On 17/6/2002, he came back to visit us. We had been writing to Kevin and Amy and our good friend Wally Wombat as they went Bikeabout Australia.

Aimee and Kevin came to talk about Canada. Aimee and Kevin were on a working visa for 12 months. They rode around Australia on push bikes starting from Sydney. They were not bikes like we have. It was a bike you lean back on. There are two wheels at the back and one wheel at the front. The bike had a back pack on the back of the seat. It held a tent, two sleeping bags and a lot of food.

The Canadian flag has a maple leaf in the middle. The Canadian national anthem is O Canada. In Canada they speak two languages - English and French. Canada is very cold. It can get down to minus 37 degrees C. Once Aimee couldn't find her car. There are a lot of mountains. The warmest it has been is about 40 C.

In Canada there are brown bears, black bears and grizzly bears. If you see a black bear just make a lot of noise but if you see a brown bear or a grizzly bear run down hill because their front legs are shorter than their back legs.
