Commonwealth
Games
Welcome to the Melbourne Commonwealth Games March 15 - 26 2006
The MCG will be the heart and soul of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. From the opening moment, to the final cheer of the Closing Ceremony, the action will be set to the soundtrack of thunderous applause and cheers. Here and at other great venues, elite athletes from 71 nations will go for gold and glory across 16 sports. The Melbourne 2006 Sports Program comprises 12 individual and four team sports, with a total of 24 disciplines to be contested at the XVIII Commonwealth Games.
The Baton
The baton will travel more than 180,000 kilometres and visit all 71 nations of the Commonwealth in one year and one day. This is a world first, as no Games relay has ever visited all member nations. This makes the Melbourne 2006 Queen's Baton Relay the world's longest, most inclusive relay. The baton arrives in Australia on 24 January 2006.
