Celebrating 165 Years
Horsham is the administrative capital of central western Victoria (the Wimmera) and hosts a range of quality major events from sport to cultural interests. It lies 300 kilometres north of Melbourne and 450 kilometres south east of Adelaide on the main rail and road links between Victoria and South Australia. Speaking of sport, the Horsham golf course is known as country Victoria’s best, as awarded from the pro-am circuit.

Horsham is nestled beside the Wimmera River as it meanders from the Grampians to Lakes Hindmarsh and Albacutya. In normal seasons the region boasts many fine lakes and a Wimmera River system and is extremely popular with fishing, boating, swimming and water enthusiasts.
Horsham Rural City is a Local Government Area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the western part of the state. It has an area of 4,239 square kilometres. In 2001 it had a population of 18,000.
This large city has been prominent as the winner of Australia’s tidiest town (in 2001) and the community pride is evident everywhere. The city boasts a vibrant shopping precinct with a wide variety to choose from. It’s coffee shops and restaurants are fast gaining a reputation for variety and quality.
Modern Horsham is a busy regional centre, with beautiful Botanical Gardens, designed by William Guilfoyle, and it is an active participant in the Tidy Towns Competition winning several awards. The Horsham Art Gallery houses the Mack Jost Collection of Australian and European paintings, prints and drawings. Annual Festivities include the Wimmera Machinery Field Days, held at nearby Longerenong College, the Horsham Fishing Competition, the Art Is ... Festival, the Spring Garden Festival and the Kanamaroo Festival
History
The original name for Horsham was Wopetbungundiler, a name given by the Kooris before Europeans arrived. Other suggestions suggest the name was bogambilor, meaning 'place of flowers', for the site was covered with a dense scrub of wattles at the time.
James Darlot leased land near the Wimmera
River in the 1842 and named the
area Horsham
after his chance holiday visit to the Sussex town of Horsham in

store, Horsham's first, and the start of a village which was later

HMAS Horsham (J-235/M-235), named for the city of Horsham in Victoria, was a Bathurst class corvette built by the Williamstown Dockyard at Melbourne in Victoria. It was launched on 16 May 1942 and commissioned on 18 November 1942. HMAS Horsham was paid off on 17 December 1945 and sold for scrap to the Delta Shipping Company of Hong Kong on 8 August 1956. - (Sources - Wikipedia.)
