Our School History - celebrating 150 Years

Horsham Primary School No. 298 was established 150 years ago on 19th of January 1857 as the Horsham National School in a two room dwelling on four Allotments bounded by Wilson, Hamilton, Urquhart and McPherson Streets. James Simpson was the first Head Teacher. In 1862 it was renamed the Horsham Common School No. 298.

After 20 years the original school buildings were overcrowded and dilapidated beyond repair. One teacher actually fell through the floor boards. In 1876 Head Teacher Trevan reported an annual attendance of 125 with another 60 excluded. He converted three rooms from the teachers residence into classrooms and so provided for 44 more pupils.

At last a new school was built in 1877 on land enclosed by Roberts Avenue, Urquhart and McLachlan Streets. The new brick building of two large classrooms was overcrowded from the outset. A year later a verandah was enclosed to make two extra classrooms. In 1880 a further two rooms were added, and yet another in 1890 to accommodate an annual attendance of 400. In 1902 a dead-end corridor was enclosed to make another room.
