At Horsham Primary School, our approach to teaching Numeracy is both balanced and evidence-informed. We combine explicit instruction with problem-solving lessons to ensure students not only build strong foundational skills but also learn to apply their mathematical understanding in meaningful, real-life contexts.
Our practice is guided by decades of educational research, including principles from Cognitive Load Theory, retrieval practice, spaced learning, and interleaved learning. To support this, we incorporate daily reviews that help students consolidate previous learning and make stronger connections across concepts.
Our goal is for every student to master the age-level curriculum, and for those ready to go further, we provide opportunities to extend their thinking through higher-order questions, open-ended tasks, and real-world investigations.
During explicit instruction and guided practice, we use mini whiteboards as a key tool to constantly check for understanding. This allows teachers to provide immediate feedback and adjust instruction to meet student needs in the moment.
At Horsham Primary School, we believe every student can succeed in mathematics when given the right support, challenge, and opportunity to connect their learning to the world around them.
